Jefferson Hall Rings
With Lively Debate

Jefferson Hall, located in the
center of the West Range, since
1825 has been the home of the
Jefferson Literary and Debating
Society.

The Society, founded by students
who were originally a splinter
group of the Washington Literary
Society, is the oldest existing
organization on the Grounds
the second oldest Greek
society in the United States.

Traditionally the Hall has been
one of the University's centers of
open discussion, public meeting and
forum debate. Its avowed purpose
is to "provide for our common
improvement in debate, promote
the general culture amongst ourselves
and those around us, and drill
ourselves in all exercises which
strengthen for the free duties of
citizenship."

The Society meets at 7:29 every
Friday night in the Hall and
throughout the years provides for
prominent speakers of recognized
importance to speak to its members
the University community.

All mate students in regular
attendance at the University are
eligible for membership, and may
apply for the semi-annual membership
interviews later this fall.
